Clinical Supervision –
My supervision style is collaborative and supportive, fostering a safe and open environment where practitioners feel empowered to share their experiences and concerns. I place a strong focus on ethical, safe practice, ensuring that both supervisee and client wellbeing are prioritised. Encompassing the foundation of supervision as a Gatekeeper to the client work. A little more about me –
I’m Sarah…. The clinical supervisor
I entered into becoming a counselling supervisor with a few goals in mind: One, have I gained enough experience and knowledge to justify working as a supervisor? Two, can I provide a valued safe space for supervisees to feel able to bring whatever they need to supervision? Three, as a supervisee what would you want from your supervisor?
I bring experience of the client work; I feel the wealth of over 10,000+ client hours over the years have informed my practice. Starting out working on placement many years ago as a children’s counsellor, and moving into adult work, addiction, veteran’s, students, parents, core services, domestic/sexual abuse, community based, school based, charity based, university based and EAP is in their somewhere, alongside private practice. I also bring theoretical knowledge, working additionally as a counselling lecturer, a unique insight into up to date theory and challenges faced by counsellors in training.
I work from an integrative approach to counselling in my client work, this allows for a holistic view, by pulling on theoretical models which may suit the client’s presenting issues. As a supervisor I feel this translates across to the needs of a supervisee. Allowing space to explore the theoretical models and approaches the supervisee adheres to and how they wish to work with the clients.
I adopted Inskipp and Proctors approach to supervision based on the simplicity of the model, knowing the Normative stage focuses on ethical practice, ensuring the supervisee is working within professional standards and legal requirements. It involves monitoring boundaries, confidentiality, and competence. Whereas the Formative emphasises the supervisee’s learning and development, including skills, knowledge, and personal qualities. It involves providing guidance and support to enhance the supervisee’s abilities and confidence. The model includes the essential Restorative aspect, which provides a supportive and safe space for the supervisee to process their experiences and emotions related to their work. It focuses on the supervisee’s well-being and helps them manage any challenges or difficulties they may be facing.
As a supervisor I provide a safe, professional and ethical environment for you, as the supervisee, to bring your client work and the impact of your work into exploration from a collaborative and compassionate perspective.
